Welcome to Shun Poo Kan Aikido - North Carolina

Shun Poo Kan Aikido teaches traditional Aikido philosophy and techniques. Founded in the United Kingdom in 1977, it is led by Brian Burrows, 6th Dan.

Shun Poo Kan roughly translates into ‘Spring Breeze’. This is an apt name as one only has to attend a few classes at any of the Shun Poo Kan dojos to realize that the school promotes a refreshing atmosphere of cooperation,  respect and integrity.

Classes are designed for absolute beginners. Primarily an adult class, Mr. Gilbert regularly teaches seminars to younger students to introduce them to the art.  Aikido can be taught to children as young as 8. (Younger students may be accepted after discussion with the instructor) Students will learn basic techniques, break-falls, history and etiquette.

Stop by for a visit, the instructor is happy to answer any questions that you might have about the club, or Aikido in general.

SPK Aikido North Carolina is the ONLY traditional Aikido school in the Gaston County area, we value our links to a tradition going back to the original Hombu dojo in Japan, through our affiliation with SPK in the UK.

Aikido is an Effective, Pragmatic, Martial Art

  • There are no rules in life, no 3 minute rounds, no referee or commission standing by to enforce the rules. Its just you, and the opponent and the need to immediately remove the threat.

  • If you walk away safely, and protect your loved ones in a dangerous situation—you win.

  • We don’t seek conflict, but we can handle it when offered.

  • Protect yourself, dissipate aggression, control your environment.
